Performing and Oil Transfer for Portrait of Esme

Once a drawing for a painting is completed, it needs to be transferred to a panel or canvas.

This video covers the process of transferring a drawing to a panel using an oil transfer technique.

For this painting, rather than my usual aluminum composite panel primed in a mid-value, neutral gray, I’ll be painting on a cradled, pre-primed, 16x20 inch, ‘Gessoboard’ wooden panel manufactured by Ampersand. I’ve further prepared the panel by adding a wash of Raw Umber oil paint.

To do the transfer, I’ll be using Winsor & Newton Raw Umber oil paint (adding no medium), an old, heavily worn, soft, synthetic, 1-inch brush, paper towels, and a red BIC ballpoint pen (for tracing).

This 5 minute video was condensed from around 1 hour and 15 minutes of footage, which is roughly the time it took to perform the transfer.
