Happy Little Radio Telescopes (Underpainting Continues)
As I continue working on the underpainting for the Free Will commission painting, part of what I need to do is work out the details in the background landscape. This background has some inherent challenges because I am trying to incorporate multiple, wildly different landscapes into one continuous scene while transitioning from a sunny, verdant landscape on the right to a barren, stormy landscape on the left.
Thrown into all of this complexity are some areas of completely invented landscape, particularly in the areas of transition. In the drawing, I very roughly sketched in some of these areas, but decided to work out the specifics in the underpainting where I would be working at full scale and at full value.
In this 15 minute video, I talk a little about my thought process when working on landscapes, about creating depth, about inventing topography, and about making a change to the drawing during the underpainting stage.
As always, please let me know in the comments if you have any questions, or would like an idea explained further.
