Transferring a Large Drawing in Multiple Sections
The final drawing for my current commission painting is finally ready to transfer to the waiting 96x40-inch aluminum composite panel using an oil transfer technique.
Drawings this large need to be transferred in sections, and in this video I go over the process.
The aluminum composite panel has been primed with Rublev Lead Oil Primer tined a neutral gray with the addition of Winsor and Newton Ivory Black and Burnt Sienna oil paint.
The transfer is being done using Winsor and Newton Raw Umber oil paint applied to the back of the drawing, and traced over using a red ink Bic ball point pen. The tape used to fasten the drawing in place over the panel is a special artist's tape purchased from my local art supply store. The tape holds well, but can be cleanly removed without tearing the drawing, damaging the panel, or leaving behind any adhesive residue.
The to-scale final drawing for the painting has been blown up to full size and printed off in sections using a large format printer at my local Kinkos copy shop on the standard printer paper.
This transfer took over 12 full hours to complete over the course of 4 days. (I had roughly 11 hours of video footage, and didn't film everything.) I'll allow the transfer to dry for a full 48 hours before beginning the underpainting.
